What does 'XA' mean and why is it used?
Every post that is written will find its way into the archives. Some posts should *not be* archived. Looking for people or asking for E-mail addresses are two examples of posts that should be kept out of the archives.

To keep something from being permanently stored in the archives, use the code XA along with the subject title in the Subject Field of your E-mail program.

For example: XA - Need E-mail address

This will instantly flag the Archive Manager that this post is not to be saved for posterity. Your post will only remain in the archives for the duration of 2 weeks in consideration of those who read the mail via the web.
_______________

What exactly are the archives?
The archives are a place on the web where all past calligraphic related messages are stored. Yahoo features a search engine associated with the archives, making it easy find the information you are looking for.
_______________

Where can I find the message archives?
Cyberscribe message archives can be found at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberscribes/messages> Make sure you are logged on with your Yahoo!Groups ID and password. You must be a current member of the list in order to view the archives.
_______________

While viewing the archives, I noticed that all messages are numbered. I also noticed big gaps of missing numbers. Can you explain?
The only posts that are retained are those with a calligraphic topic. A calligraphic post with XA in the subject will be removed after two weeks, as the author has indicated that this is not to be saved by using the XA designation.
_______________

What exactly is a moderated list?
A moderated
list means every post sent to the list must first be approved by a moderator. This list is moderated to help keep it on-topic.
_______________

I sent a note to the list and I haven't seen it posted yet. What should I do?
First,
you should check the recent messages on Yahoo!Groups <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberscribes/messages> to see if your mail was approved by a moderator. The most recent posts appear at the *bottom* of the list. Occasionally, your mail will be posted but you don't receive a copy. The best answer for this is server 'hiccups' Please be sure to always check the archives first.

Because the list is moderated, there may be a lapse of time between when you send your mail, and when a moderator approves it. Please be patient. Posts are primarily approved during US Pacific time.

If your post was severely off-topic, it wasn't approved. Jokes, humor, click to donate sites, virus warnings, hoaxes and test E-mails are considered off topic. We are very lenient, realizing our art extends through many factors. Please be courteous of your fellow members when posting.

I am on AOL and receiving the digest. Sometimes the digest is not delivered, what should I do?
You can always catch up on missed mail at the Cyberscribe message archive on Yahoo!Groups:
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberscribes/messages> You will need to log in using your Yahoo!Groups I.D and password, and be a current member of the Cyberscribes list to access the archives.
Sometimes, AOL members have mail difficulties, especially with the digest. The best thing to do is to contact AOL tech support and keep up with your mail through the message archives.

Many AOL subscribers have decided to set up an additional 'free mail' account. Yahoo has been reported as very reliable, as has Excite. If you are having more than an occasional problem, you might want to go ahead and do this so that you will have a back-up way of receiving mail.

I receive my mail through a regular ISP and I am not receiving Cyberscribe mail while my other mail seems to be coming through fine. Can you advise me?
The first thing you should do is check your subscription settings on your 'Delivery Options' page (read the FAQ on postponing mail for a more detailed description) to see that your delivery settings are as you want them (ie: digest, no mail, etc) If everything appears to be in order, you should check with your ISP. We have had occasional incidents of list members ISP's blocking the Yahoo!Groups domain. They think their members are being spammed.

Another thing that has surfaced is people using Outlook Express blocking a sender and accidentally blocking the Yahoo!Groups domain. It might be worth a look in your blocked senders file if you use Outlook Express.

At the Yahoo!Groups FAQ it mentions being able to upload files.
I do not see that option. How do I upload a file?

At present, we don't use the File area on Yahoo!Groups for exchanging graphics. Cyberscribes have a separate page for sharing graphics located at <http://www.calligraph.com/web/callig-graphic> Please refer to FAQ section on the Graphic Board for more information

How do I post to the Graphic Board?
Posting to the Graphic Board is very easy! First make sure that you have saved your image as either a .jpg or .gif. Attach your graphic to an email along with any descriptive text you would like to add and send it to:
Make sure your graphic is within the acceptable file size: at least 10k and no larger than 75k (if possible).

You also need to make sure that you have the proper settings in your email program:The graphics board is a perl program. The program does not know about all of the possible attachment encoding. The best one to use is BinHex. In your email preferences or properties look for settings related to attachments. If you have a Mac, don't use Apple flavor encoding, make sure BinHex is checked.

What about sending attachments to the list?
Attachments are not allowed on the Cyberscribes list. Yahoo!Groups strips all incoming e-mail of any attachments and they will not show up.
Attachments can be any of the following:
Text: use of bold, italic, or colored text, and text formatted to create images.
HTML mail: use of colors, graphics, borders, special fonts and backgrounds uses HTML coding and will not be included in your e-mail. Instead you will see a message at the bottom of your post after it goes to the list saying that attachments have been removed from this message.
Graphics: any graphic is considered an attachment, including .jpg's,.bmps,.gif's and other similar files.

Some messages have a note that reads: [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]. What exactly does that mean?
It means that the member who posted it sent an attachment or an HTML coded message to the list. Yahoo!Groups strips all incoming mail of attachments. See above answer for more information on what constitutes an attachment.

I have a new email address, what do I do? Do I need to unsubscribe then resubscribe?
No. You can simply make this change at the Yahoo!Groups website, here's how:

Log in to Yahoo Groups http://groups.yahoo.com/ using your Yahoo ID and password.

Click on Account Info in the upper right.

Click on the Edit button on the Member Information segment, and type your new email address under one of the alternate address tabs.

Click on Finished when you are done.

Yahoo will have to verify your address. They will send you an email that you have to respond to. It gives you a URL you have to click on.

Once that is done, log back in to Yahoo, click on Account Info again and check that everything is correct and that your address no longer has "unverified" in red under it.

Go to Yahoo My Groups http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups, this lists all the Yahoo groups you belong to.

Click on Cyberscribes.

Click on Edit My Membership in the upper right corner.

There is a pull down menu under the section called Email Address which will list all the available addresses you can have your email sent to. Pick the address you want to use and click on Save Changes at the bottom.

You can log back in to Yahoo Account Info and delete the old address.

Also, please notify the List Managers when you change your ISP, Email address, snail mail address, etc. This will insure that your membership record stays current. Send an E-mail with the corrected information to:
< cyberscribes-owner@yahoogroups.com > Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our system running smoothly.
