Welcome to The Illumination Gallery

Within these pages you are invited to explore the artistry of illuminated manuscripts as it is interpreted by this modern scribe residing near Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Ahlborn is a contemporary illuminator who draws steady inspiration from the traditions of classical manuscript illumination. A chemist and engineer by education, Mel Ahlborn applies this knowledge to develop high performance gilding gesso with a growing reputation for reliability. She utilizes the principles of golden proportion and sacred geometry to bring a depth of movement to her woven patterns. She is a freelance artist who accepts commissions, small and large, and she is eager to speak with you about your ideas for a commissioned piece of work.

These web pages are new, mounted in late September 1996, and will undergo improvement in early November. You, the viewer, can expect to see more and varied images, with a changing series of links to other Illumination Resources throughout the World Wide Web.

The Illumination Portfolio will expand for you to view more art from the MB Ahlborn Illumination Studio.

The Illumination Supply Store will expand to include more in-depth gilding techniques.

The Illumination Portrait will expand to feature some fine artists and their work, a mini-gallery-within-this-gallery.
